Leishmaniasis disease
Hello, I am Barbara, President of P.A.D. and I live here in Spain with Eddie, my husband, eight dogs and seven cats!
I want to tell you about my experiences with leishmaniasis. Four out of our eight dogs have the disease but it is impossible to tell just by looking at them which ones they are. Dina, the husky and Phillip, the pointer contracted leishmaniasis before we adopted them but Emma, a sort of cross German Shepherd, and Jenny, a podenco, were diagnosed as positive years after we adopted them. After a short course of injections (which would not be necessary for dogs who have not been affected to a high degree) we give them a zyloric (anapurinol) tablet every day and forget about the problem.
Let me tell you more about Philip. He was found abandoned in the countryside by John Vermeulen who founded P.A.D. John noticed that Phillips claws grew very quickly and he was lethargic. On testing, Phillip proved positive and to a high degree and so he was given a course of injections and began taking zyloric. That was about eleven years ago.
John retired and went to live in Florida taking Phillip with him and they lived there happily for a year until John was taken ill and died. He had requested that Phillip should be brought back to P.A.D. so Eddie and I went to America to collect him (along with his friend Tee Bee and Albert the cat). At no point was the fact that he had leishmaniasis an issue with either the American or Spanish authorities. Of course we had grown so fond of the two dogs that we adopted them ourselves. Tragically, Phillip died only three weeks ago but his death was unconnected to leishmaniasis. He was thirteen years old and he simply faded away because of his age.
